Genus: Diplotaxodon
Type locality: Off Monkey Bay, Lake Malawi, at about 80 m depth
Biotope: Deep-water habitat over muddy bottom
Geographic distribution: Known only from the southern part of Lake Malawi; collected off Monkey Island in the South East arm
Typical adult size: About 14 cm standard length (approximately 17 cm total length)
Sexual dimorphism: Poorly known. A presumed male shows overall dark coloration in breeding condition, with a narrow white margin along the dorsal fin and one or two faint eggspots on the anal fin.
Special notes: Known only from the holotype described by Turner et al. (1998). The species has not been reliably identified again since its original description.

Diplotaxodon ecclesi is characterized by a slender body, proportionally large eye, relatively small jaws, and a narrow white dorsal-fin margin in presumed breeding males. It differs from D. macrops by its more elongate body, narrower dorsal margin, smaller adult size, and relatively smaller eye.
