Unknown. Presumably associated with open sand, as the only
known specimen was collected together with sand-dwelling
cichlids, possibly using a beach seine.
Geographic distribution:
Lake Malawi. Earlier reports mentioning Lake Tanganyika are
considered erroneous.
Special notes:
A very poorly known species described from a single mature
male specimen. It differs from other Aulonocara by having only
moderately enlarged infraorbital pores, while the preorbital
pores are enlarged as in typical members of the genus.
The elongate body shape and dark breeding coloration resemble
the so-called “Chitande Type” Aulonocara, but the apparent
absence of anal-fin egg-spots casts doubt on its placement
among sand-dwelling Aulonocara. It may represent a cave-dwelling
form and its generic placement remains uncertain.
