Genus: Diplotaxodon
Biotope: An offshore deep-water form associated with open-water habitats, occurring mainly in midwater or near-bottom zones rather than shallow littoral areas.
Geographic distribution: Lake Malawi, reported as lake-wide, with records spanning from Chilumba in the north to the South East Arm.
Sexual dimorphism: Breeding males show a subdued darkening of the upper body and dorsal fin. In some individuals the pelvic and anal fins are also darkened, and the anal fin can show one or two relatively large pale yellowish eggspots along the fin margin.
Special notes: The name refers to its placement within the slender-bodied limnothrissa complex and to the dorsal darkening shown by breeding males. Genomic data support this taxon as distinct and place it as the sister lineage to D. limnothrissa sensu stricto.
