Known from Thumbi Island West and Nkhata Bay, Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Up to 123.6 mm SL (largest known specimen, holotype).
Sexual dimorphism:
Unknown.
Habitat:
Rocky habitat, possibly with sand, at depths of 17–38 m.
Diet:
Suspected paedophage; lower-jaw dentition shows specializations typical of
paedophagous haplochromines.
Breeding:
Unknown.
Special notes:
Distinguished by an extremely narrow lacrimal bone relative to eye size and
an interrupted midlateral stripe composed of spots and line segments.
Taxonomic boundaries of the genus Hemitaeniochromis remain problematic,
with some similar forms likely belonging to Protomelas.
