Genus: Lethrinops
Type locality: Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Sandy environments, typically at depths between 7 and 20 m.
Geographic distribution: Widespread in Lake Malawi, occurring in suitable sandy habitats around much of the lake.
Typical adult size: Males up to about 16 cm TL; females up to about 14 cm TL.
Recommended aquarium size: At least 500 liters, with a minimum tank length of about 150 cm.
Aquarium setup: Large sandy areas should dominate the aquarium bottom, interrupted by a few larger rocks. Best kept in groups (for example 3 males with 7 females) and housed only with other peaceful cichlids, such as Aulonocara species.
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds mainly on invertebrates, small crustaceans, and insect larvae sifted from the sand, usually foraging in groups.
Aggression: Generally peaceful, both towards conspecifics and other species. Low intraspecific aggression often allows several males to show full coloration in a group.
Special notes: A well-known and widely distributed sand-dwelling Lethrinops species, often used as a reference point for comparison with other members of the genus.
