According to Prof. Dr. George Turner, the identity of this species is
uncertain. The type specimens are small, colourless individuals
collected from an unknown locality in the lake approximately a
century ago. Three later described Mchenga species were
previously identified as M. eucinostomus, but were mainly
separated based on differences in bower morphology, and it remains
unclear which, if any, corresponds to the original taxon. Future
genetic analysis of the type material may help clarify its status.
