Genus: Mylochromis
Type locality: Domira Bay, Lake Malawi
Biotope: Shallow sandy habitats along the lake shores.
Geographic distribution: Occurs all around the shores of Lake Malawi, but is generally scarce; locally more common at Hai Reef (Tanzania) and Chiwindi (Mozambique).
Typical adult size: At least 21 cm total length; large males may develop a slight nuchal hump and a somewhat longer snout.
Diet: Feeds on insect larvae and mollusks.
Special notes: A deep-bodied species with a pointed snout and small mouth. The oblique band is usually broken into a series of spots. Non-breeding individuals display four to eight broad vertical bars, sometimes accentuated as dark blotches in a diagonal series.
