Genus: Mylochromis
Type locality: Eastern shore of South East Arm between the Bar and Fort Maguire, Lake Malawi
Biotope: Primarily associated with Vallisneria beds; during breeding adults move to intermediate habitat where males in breeding dress are most frequently observed.
Geographic distribution: Lake-wide distribution.
Typical adult size: Average adult size about 15 cm total length.
Diet: Invertebrate feeder; picks insects and crustaceans from among aquatic plants. Pharyngeal bones bear stout, blunt teeth.
Breeding: Breeding males construct a spawning pit beneath a small overhanging rock; bower building has been observed at Nankoma Island.
Special notes: Specimens from Nankoma Island have been exported under the name “Haplochromis Golden Mola”.
