Mylochromis rotundus 'Hora Mhango' Mylochromis sp. 'mollis north' Hora Mhango
Genus
Mylochromis
Type locality
Mphanga Rocks, Lake Malawi, Malawi
Biotope
Shallow rocky habitats, especially at the rock–sand interface.
Geographic distribution
Known only from shallow water at Mphanga Rocks near Chilumba in the
northwestern part of Lake Malawi. Specimens photographed as
Mylochromis sp. “mollis north” from Hora Mhango, Kakusa, and nearby
localities may represent this species, but this remains uncertain.
Typical adult size
Up to about 12.5 cm total length (based on type series).
Sexual dimorphism
Females are beige with a strong oblique stripe extending from the nape
to the caudal-fin base and into the fin rays. Males are darker, often
with golden spotting on the flank scales. Detailed breeding coloration
remains insufficiently documented.
Diet
Feeds by stirring sandy substrate between rocks, presumably taking
insect larvae and small crustaceans.
Breeding
Males construct cave-crater bowers.
Special notes
Described by Turner (2024). The species is considered to correspond
to the fish previously known in the aquarium literature as
Mylochromis sp. “mollis north”, although Turner noted that not all
photographed individuals under that name may belong to this species.
