Observed over sand near rocky reefs at about 15 m depth;
likely associated with sandy areas adjacent to rocks in the
intermediate habitat.
Geographic distribution:
Observed at Luwala Reef in the southern part of Lake Malawi.
Sexual dimorphism
Not documented in detail. Individuals observed showed a diagonal
stripe rather than the three flank spots typical of
Naevochromis chrysogaster.
Diet
Feeding behavior has not been observed. The thick chin suggests
possible specialization, potentially including paedophagy.
Special notes
Provisionally referred to as Mylochromis sp. “chrysogaster line”
because of its body shape resembling Naevochromis chrysogaster
but differing in having a diagonal flank stripe instead of
three spots. Its exact taxonomic status and relationship to
Naevochromis chrysogaster remain unresolved.
