Southern part of Lake Malawi, in shallow inshore areas from
Kande Island to Mangochi along the western shore and along the
eastern shore to Chuanga (Mozambique).
Typical adult size:
Up to about 20 cm total length.
Diet:
Specialized snail eater; gastropods and other invertebrates are
crushed with the large molariform teeth of the lower pharyngeal
bone. Stomach contents have included abundant gastropod remains,
as well as copepods, cladocerans, algae, and chironomid remains.
Special notes:
A deep-bodied species with an oblique diagonal stripe. It is
distinguished from related species by its small rounded head and
small mouth, as well as by the heavy molariform teeth on the lower
pharyngeal bone. It resembles Mylochromis anaphyrmus and
Mylochromis mola but differs in its narrower, more solid diagonal
stripe.
