Next pageMylochromis subocularis (unknown locality)
Genus: Mylochromis
Type locality: Lake Malawi
Biotope: Shallow intermediate habitat over sand.
Geographic distribution: Common at most locations around the lake.
Diet: Feeds in the sand on hard-shelled invertebrates and small snails; populations from Lake Malombe possess very large molariform pharyngeal teeth, indicating specialization on such prey.
Breeding: Males form small breeding colonies and construct shallow spawning pits. Territorial males may occur as close as 1 m apart.
Special notes: A small sand-dwelling species characterized by 6–8 prominent spots arranged in a diagonal line, often appearing as two partly overlapping rows. Formerly placed in Placidochromis due to the presence of distinct vertical bars in some populations, but reassigned to Mylochromis based on the diagonal spotting pattern.
