Open sandy substrates in shallow water, particularly along
steeply sloping sandy shores.
Geographic distribution:
Reported as having a lake-wide distribution and
occurring commonly in suitable sandy habitats.
Typical adult size:
Up to about 14 cm total length.
Recommended aquarium size:
A minimum tank length of 120 cm and a volume of
350 l are recommended.
Aquarium setup:
An aquarium with extensive open sand areas is required to
allow construction of spawning structures. Males build sand turrets
on open substrate with a characteristically slanted spawning dish on
top.
Breeding:
Territorial males construct sand turrets on the open sandy
floor. The spawning platform is slightly inclined. Breeding takes
place at the constructed site.
Aggression:
Males are territorial during the breeding period and defend
their sand structures.
Special notes:
Males of this species construct sand turrets similar in
general form to those of N. purpurans, but the spawning dish
is more distinctly slanted. The species is regarded as one of the
smaller members of the genus compared to larger congeners.
