Genus: Otopharynx
Biotope: Intermediate habitat; shallow areas with territorial males recorded at depths between 7–15 m.
Geographic distribution: Lundo and Hongi Islands, and coastal areas around Liuli and Thumbi Point in Tanzania.
Sexual dimorphism: Males defend territories and display a distinct breeding coloration; the species is characterized by a noticeably elongated snout compared with Otopharynx heterodon.
Breeding: Territorial males establish and defend domains, particularly at deeper levels within the habitat.
Aggression: Males are territorial.
Special notes: Closely resembles Otopharynx heterodon but differs in possessing a markedly longer snout; the two species are not known to occur sympatrically. In the aquarium trade it has been referred to as “Maravichromis Three Spot”. Although it may represent a geographical variant of O. heterodon, it is treated as a distinct species pending further morphological or behavioral evidence.
