Shallow muddy habitats, including extreme shallows along
sandy and muddy shores.
Geographic distribution:
Recorded at Liuli and Senga Bay; also observed at Kambiri
Point on the southwestern shore of Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Maximum total length about 18 cm.
Sexual dimorphism:
Breeding males are yellow-blue with a metallic blue head and
possess egg-spots on the anal fin.
Diet:
Occurs in habitats densely populated by small sand-dwelling
cichlids. The relatively small mouth indicates feeding on small
prey items.
Breeding:
May construct a bower; no such structure has been recorded.
Special notes:
Very elongate, cylindrical species with three obscure flank
blotches arranged in a diagonal line. Previously assigned to
Mylochromis and recorded by Snoeks & Hanssens (2004)
as O. sp. ‘productus sharp snout’.
