Eastern shore of the South-East Arm, between the Bar and Fort Maguire, Lake Malawi, Malawi.
Biotope:
Vegetated zones among beds of Vallisneria and Ceratophyllum,
especially in the southern section of the lake.
Geographic distribution:
Primarily the southern part of Lake Malawi; also reported
from the Shire River.
Typical adult size:
Approximately 16 cm total length.
Diet:
Stomach content examinations found algae, fragments of
higher plants and small crustaceans.
Special notes:
A cichlid exported in the early 1980s under the trade names
“Haplochromis Yellow Fin Mloto” and “Yellow Princess” has
been proposed to belong to this species, based on agreement
in meristic characters and the resemblance of larger specimens
to preserved type material. A closely similar form, reported as
O. sp. ‘tetraspilus molariform’, matches O. tetraspilus in most
anatomical characters but differs by having molariform teeth on
the pharyngeal jaws, whereas O. tetraspilus has fine, pointed
pharyngeal teeth.
