Deep-water habitats deeper than 50 m, associated with subdued light conditions.
Geographic distribution:
Known only from the type locality at Chilola Bay, Lake Malawi, Mozambique.
Typical adult size:
Deep-water Placidochromis species are generally small, with most remaining under
10 cm standard length.
Special notes:
Placidochromis chilolae is included in group 3 of the deep-living
Placidochromis assemblage, a set defined by species possessing 14–24 gill rakers. The
deep-water Placidochromis represent a distinct assemblage inhabiting and breeding in dimly
lit depths beyond the lake’s accessible shallow zones.
