Deep-water habitats generally below 50 m, associated with subdued light
conditions.
Geographic distribution:
Collected at Chiwanga Bay, Mozambique and at Nkhotakota, Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Deep-water Placidochromis species are generally small, with most remaining under
10 cm standard length.
Special notes:
Placidochromis longirostris is included in group 3 of the deep-living
Placidochromis assemblage, a set defined by species possessing 14–24 gill rakers. It is
distinguished within this group by a longer snout than other members. The deep-water
Placidochromis represent a distinct assemblage inhabiting and breeding in dimly lit depths
beyond accessible shallow waters.
