Crater lake environment; occurs in the open water
of Lake Kingiri.
Geographic distribution:
Confined to crater Lake Kingiri in Tanzania.
Typical adult size:
Maximum size reported at approximately
20 cm total length or slightly more.
Special notes:
Undescribed larger-bodied form from Lake Kingiri,
apparently derived after colonisation of the lake
by Rhamphochromis sp. ‘kingiri dwarf’.
Represents a secondary increase in body size within
this isolated crater-lake lineage.
Only about a dozen large individuals were collected
during sampling in 2011, and the form was reportedly
being actively targeted with gillnets. Genetic work
examining the shift in body size between the dwarf
and large forms has been undertaken.
