Known only from deep water at 100–128 m in the northern part of the southeastern arm of
Lake Malawi, around Domwe and Chinyankwazi Islands.
Typical adult size:
Maximum size reported is 12 cm total length.
Sexual dimorphism:
Females and immature males are described as sandy in colour with six brownish vertical bars
beneath the dorsal fin and two additional bars on the caudal peduncle.
Special notes:
A slender, barred species with a relatively large mouth and eye, showing fewer vertical bars
than other members of the genus. It is separated from Sciaenochromis psammophilus by a more
prominent premaxillary pedicel and a broader interorbital region, and it differs from
Sciaenochromis ahli by a shallower body and fewer bars. Commercial importance is considered
minor. Earlier field records did not separate this form from S. psammophilus, and the two
were later regarded as occupying clearly different depth ranges.
