Stigmatochromis sp. 'modestus mbenji' Penga Penga Island

Intermediate habitat with large caves at a depth of about 12 m near Mbenji Island.
Geographic distribution:
Observed at Mbenji Island, Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Males observed at approximately 20 cm total length.
Sexual dimorphism:
Only large blue males have been observed; females have not been recorded.
Breeding:
Two males were seen chasing each other and appeared to defend a spawning area within
large caves, although no actual spawning sites were located.
Special notes:
A rare and undescribed form tentatively placed in the genus Stigmatochromis.
One photographed male showed three lateral spots on the body. It differs
from Stigmatochromis modestus by its larger size and deeper body shape.
