Tramitichromis sp. 'kande' Kande Island
Genus: Tramitichromis
Biotope: Breeding habitat at Kande Island on the central western shore of Lake Malawi, recorded at about 8 m depth.
Breeding: Males construct a very shallow bower similar in form to that described for Tramitichromis sp. ‘red gular’.
Special notes: Tramitichromis is characterized by a distinctive lower pharyngeal bone with long, slender teeth, including markedly elongated anterior teeth with backward-bent tips, and by a downward-projecting anterior blade of the pharyngeal bone. The lower gill-rakers are robust and can form a near-horizontal grid that separates heavier sand from lighter food items during sand-sifting. Breeding males of this form are noted for a distinct gold-orange patch on the head and nape.
