From the bar at the south end of the lake, Lake Malawi, Malawi
Geographic distribution:
Reportedly restricted to the southern tip of the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, south of
Boadzulu Island.
Typical adult size:
Up to about 10 cm total length.
Biotope:
Deeper-water benthic habitat; recorded at about 19–40 m depth near the southern side of
Boadzulu Island.
Diet:
Generalized benthic feeder (based on stomach analyses of three specimens).
Special notes:
The provided notes on Trematocranus labifer indicate a mouth form reminiscent of
Otopharynx ovatus and Protomelas insignis, but the suspected specimen was not preserved,
and field surveys cited did not record T. labifer.
