Rocky habitat, often with some sediment present.
Associated with rock surfaces, crevices, and adjacent sandy patches.
Geographic distribution:
Lake Malawi, western shore in the Nkhata Bay region.
Typical adult size:
Approximately 10–12 cm total length.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males generally more intensely colored and slightly larger than females.
Females tend to show a duller brownish coloration.
Recommended aquarium size:
300 L or larger.
Aquarium setup:
Rock-based setup with numerous caves and visual barriers.
Best kept as one male with several females; multiple males only
in large aquaria with sufficient structure.
Diet:
Herbivorous aufwuchs feeder.
Consumes algae and associated microorganisms from rock surfaces.
Breeding:
Presumed maternal mouthbrooder, as in other members of the genus.
Aggression:
High intraspecific aggression.
Territorial behavior typical for elongatus-complex mbuna.
Special notes:
Brown-colored elongatus-type population from the Nkhata Bay area.
