Genus: Gephyrochromis
Type locality: Florence Bay, Lake Malawi.
Biotope: Sandy habitats. Typically inhabits the lake bottom at depths between 7 and 20 meters.
Geographic distribution: Northern part of Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size: Commonly around 10 cm. Males can reach up to approximately 13 cm, females remain slightly smaller.
Sexual dimorphism: Males are significantly more colorful, showing a golden-yellow sheen on the back and fins and light blue metallic coloration on the sides and belly. Females are less intensely colored.
Recommended aquarium size: At least 250 liters.
Aquarium setup: The aquarium should be furnished with sufficient rock structures arranged to provide numerous hiding places. Best kept with calm tank mates due to its peaceful nature.
Diet: Omnivorous. In nature it feeds mainly on invertebrates found in the substrate and filters sediment layers on stones and rocks. In the aquarium it accepts most types of food.
Breeding: Maternal mouth-brooder. A relatively easy species to breed, with a typical brood size of approximately 25 to 40 fry. Requires calm surroundings to breed successfully.
Aggression: Peaceful both toward conspecifics and other species.
Special notes: Gephyrochromis lawsi is an attractively colored and comparatively peaceful mbuna species, well suited to community aquaria with other calm Lake Malawi cichlids.
