Genus: Gephyrochromis
Biotope: Open sandy habitats. Observed feeding by scooping sand from the soft bottom.
Geographic distribution: Southern part of Lake Malawi. Found south of Liuli, extending at least as far as Londo in Mozambique. A population is also recorded at Membe Point on Likoma Island.
Aggression: Peaceful and non-territorial. Breeding males do not defend territories.
Special notes: Females and non-breeding males show a barred pattern. Breeding males are colorful. Previously referred to as Pseudotropheus sp. ‘tropheops sand’ and Tropheops sp. ‘sand’, later assigned to Gephyrochromis based on tooth structure and feeding behavior.
