Genus: Gephyrochromis
Biotope: Sand-dwelling habitat.
Geographic distribution: Occurs on both sides of Lake Malawi and has been found at Ruarwe, Hora Mhango, Metangula, Lumessi, Chilolo, and Gome.
Sexual dimorphism: Males are very dark gray to coppery-blue, while mouthbrooding females are light gray.
Breeding: Territorial males have not been observed and it appears that males do not need to be territorial to spawn.
Special notes: The depth preference varies between seven and 25 meters. The population at Metangula lacks the black submarginal band in the dorsal seen in other populations, but otherwise all have a similar coloration with vertical bars as the most prominent feature.
