Type locality:
Rocky shores of Muona Inn, southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, Malawi.
Biotope:
Rocky substrates in benthopelagic freshwater environments in a tropical climate.
Geographic distribution:
Western coast of the southeastern arm of Lake Malawi, extending northward to Namaso Bay.
Typical adult size:
Up to 7.8 cm standard length.
Sexual dimorphism:
Pronounced; males intensify yellow or orange coloration during the breeding period, while females are duller with subtler barring.
Diet:
Feeds mainly on loose aufwuchs scraped from rock surfaces in shallow waters.
Breeding:
Maternal mouthbrooder; females incubate fertilized eggs and early larvae in the buccal cavity and release free-swimming fry.
Aggression:
Non-territorial; typically occurs singly, in pairs, or in slightly larger groups among small rocks.
