Shallow, inshore habitats; benthopelagic niches in tropical
freshwater environments.
Geographic distribution:
East central coast of Lake Malawi, including areas near Likoma
Island and the Mozambique shore.
Typical adult size:
Up to 7.7 cm SL.
Sexual dimorphism:
Sexually monomorphic in live coloration; both sexes exhibit the
striped pattern.
Breeding:
Maternal mouthbrooder; females mature as small as 43 mm SL and
produce around 7 ripe ova.
Special notes:
Live coloration features alternating horizontal orange and pale
blue or blue-green striping on the flanks, with oval orange spots
on the dorsal and caudal fins; a “fright pattern” of dusky
vertical bars may appear.
