Type locality:
Nkudzi Bay, Lake Malawi, Malawi.
Biotope:
Rocky coastal habitats.
Geographic distribution:
Southern Lake Malawi. Western coast from south of Senga Point to Mpande Island; eastern coast from Minos Reef to Chinyamwezi Island.
Typical adult size:
Males up to 10 cm in the lake (up to 12 cm in aquaria); females up to 8 cm.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males grow larger than females.
Recommended aquarium size:
150 L
Aquarium setup:
Rock-based setup with plenty of hiding places. Best kept with multiple females and other non-aggressive mbuna.
Diet:
Mainly algae in the lake. In aquaria accepts a wide range of foods, including spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops, and shrimp–peas mix.
Aggression:
Very peaceful; tolerant both within the species and toward other species.
Special notes:
One of the most peaceful small cichlids of Lake Malawi. Exhibits several geographically distinct variants.
