Genus: Maylandia
Biotope: Sediment-rich intermediate habitat with rocks, where males occupy and defend holes excavated under or between rocks. The species is usually found at depths greater than 10 m.
Geographic distribution: Endemic to Chizumulu Island in Lake Malawi.
Sexual dimorphism: Females are gray-brown in coloration and are reported to live solitarily.
Breeding: Males defend holes excavated under or between rocks, which serve as spawning sites.
Special notes: The species is most abundant in sediment-rich habitats and shows clear site fidelity to Chizumulu Island.
