Genus: Maylandia
Biotope: Sediment-rich intermediate habitat around islands, with rocks providing feeding surfaces and shelter. Males typically occupy shallow areas within this biotope.
Geographic distribution: Lake Malawi around Likoma Island and Chizumulu Island.
Typical adult size: Up to about 10 cm total length.
Breeding: Males defend small territories, usually in shallow water, which function as spawning sites.
Aggression: Territorial males show localized aggression associated with the defense of small breeding territories.
Special notes: This attractive elongate mbuna inhabits sediment-rich intermediate biotopes. The population at Chizumulu Island is darker and shows less golden yellow coloration compared to the variant found on the west coast of Likoma Island. Although it has not been exported in large numbers, its relatively small size and coloration suggest good suitability for aquarium maintenance.
