Restricted intermediate zone at the base of shallow rocky reefs, where the rocks meet
sand at a depth of about seven meters. The species inhabits the deepest parts of
these otherwise shallow reefs.
Geographic distribution:
Pombo Reef and Ndumbi Point in Tanzania, on rocky reefs located between Lundu and the
Ruhuhu River delta.
Sexual dimorphism:
Females are brown-beige and lack the bright yellow fin coloration seen in females of
Maylandia hajomaylandi. Males resemble M. hajomaylandi in size and
coloration.
Special notes:
This species closely resembles Maylandia hajomaylandi in both size and overall
coloration but differs in its very restricted habitat preference and in the lack
of yellow fin coloration in females.
