Intermediate habitat with sand and scattered rocks. The species occurs in the
intermediate zone at Jalo Reef.
Geographic distribution:
Lake Malawi at Jalo Reef.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males have very little yellow coloration and are light blue-gray with a dark-colored
tail. Females show a similar pattern but are paler in overall coloration.
Aggression:
Males behave aggressively toward conspecifics.
Special notes:
This undescribed species is part of the lime group of Maylandia, which includes
elongate mbuna with bicuspid teeth and a morphology and behavior reminiscent of
conical-toothed Cynotilapia. It is considered closely related to
Maylandia sp. ‘lime’ and Maylandia sp. ‘lime nkhomo’, but differs clearly
in coloration. The species appears to be rare, with most individuals observed living
solitarily, and spawning caves have not been observed.
