Genus: Maylandia
Biotope: Rocky habitat with little to no sediment. Typically found at depths of about 5–10 m.
Typical adult size: 15 cm / 11 cm
Recommended aquarium size: 400 L
Aquarium setup: Provide plenty of rockwork with many hiding places. Minimum tank length: 140 cm.
Keep 1 male with at least 3–4 females, or in groups (e.g., 3 males and 9 females). This is a very temperamental, aggressive mbuna—both within the species and toward other species. To reduce aggression, it is best kept together with other robust, algae-grazing mbuna species.
Diet: Herbivorous. An algae-grazing mbuna, but not a strict “aufwuchs” specialist, even though it feeds on aufwuchs (including diatoms).
Aggression: Aggressive within the species; generally tolerant toward other species.
