Tropheops sp. 'chitimba' Chitimba Bay
Genus: Tropheops
Biotope: Shallow transition zone with very large sandstone slabs; males hold territories in holes within the slabs.
Geographic distribution: Chitimba Bay, Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size: Estimated maximum total length about 8 cm.
Sexual dimorphism: Females are very light-bodied with faint beige bars and a bright yellow anal fin.
Special notes: A closely similar form, Tropheops sp. ‘band’, occurs at Nkhata Bay and was discussed in relation to “band” versus “no band” males; females there were described as gray with light yellowish-gray fins, and banded territorial males averaged about 1 cm longer than the other form. Tropheops sp. ‘chitimba’ has been suggested as a possible geographical variant of Tropheops sp. ‘mauve’, but “normal” colored individuals of that species are reported from comparable habitats both north and south of Chitimba Bay.
