Sediment-rich intermediate habitat, restricted to the rockier sections of this zone.
Geographic distribution:
Rocky shores between Nkhata Bay and Cape Manulo, Malawi.
Aquarium setup:
In nature this species inhabits rocky structures within the intermediate habitat at depths of
15 m or more, where males establish territories. Like other members of the genus, it feeds from
biocover on rocks by nibbling and dislodging filamentous algae with characteristic twisting jerks
of the body.
Aggression:
Males are territorial and show aggression primarily toward conspecific males.
Special notes:
This species belongs to the sand group of Tropheops. At Nkhata Bay it occurs sympatrically
with T. sp. ‘rust’, but is confined to deeper areas, while T. sp. ‘rust’ also occupies
shallower water down to about 5 m.
