Tropheops sp. 'elongatus namalenje' Namalenje Island

Biotope:
Sediment-rich rocky habitats in shallow water,
from the surface down to about 7 m depth.
Geographic distribution:
Endemic to Namalenje Island in the southern
half of Lake Malawi.
Typical adult size:
Males up to 13 cm total length; females up to
10 cm.
Recommended aquarium size:
An aquarium volume of at least 300 L with a
minimum tank length of 120 cm is recommended.
Aquarium setup:
Provide abundant rock structures with numerous
hiding places to reduce aggression and protect weaker
individuals.
Diet:
Feeds on algae from the aufwuchs and also
consumes plankton.
Aggression:
Aggressive both within the species and toward
other species; males defend territories vigorously.
Special notes:
An elongate Tropheops formerly included
in the Pseudotropheus elongatus species group.
Closely related to Tropheops modestus and resembles
Tropheops sp. ‘elongatus boadzulu’ in habitat use.
Males at Namalenje Island defend their territories with
marked intensity.
