Genus: Tropheops
Biotope: Wave-washed rocky habitat in turbulent shoreline areas.
Geographic distribution: Central east coast of Lake Malawi between Liutche and Londo, and at Tumbi Point in Mozambique.
Sexual dimorphism: Females are very dark and live solitarily. Males defend territories associated with large rocks.
Aquarium setup: In nature this species prefers large rocks in the turbulent rocky zone. The male’s territory typically includes a large rock, while spawning occurs in a cave beneath it and only rarely on top of the rock.
Aggression: Males defend territories vigorously, directing most aggression toward conspecific males.
Special notes: This species is not abundant and appears to favor larger rocky structures within the surge zone.
