Tropheops sp. 'orange head' Mphanga Rocks
Genus: Tropheops
Biotope: Deep intermediate habitat, particularly at depths greater than 25 m, with rocks interspersed with sandy patches. At some localities it also occurs in shallower water.
Geographic distribution: Recorded at Mphanga Rocks, Luwino Reef, Maison Reef and around Katale Island.
Sexual dimorphism: Females were observed feeding over sandy patches between rocks, while males were seen holding territories in rocky habitat.
Diet: Feeds from the biocover; males were observed jerking algae from rock surfaces in a typical Tropheops feeding manner, while females foraged over sandy areas between rocks.
Special notes: Member of the sand group within the genus Tropheops.
