Inshore fine-sand habitat; the type locality is described as fine sand at
9 m depth with few or no macrophytes.
Geographic distribution:
Known from the central part of the southeast arm of Lake Malawi, with
records from multiple sandy trawl stations and the Nankumba Peninsula.
Typical adult size:
A medium-sized species, remaining below about 20 cm total length;
the largest reported specimen measured 178.6 mm TL.
Special notes:
Diagnosed by a distinctive dark-marking pattern, including a rectangular,
elongate suprapectoral spot and a continuous posterior stripe formed by
the union of the supraanal and precaudal spots. The lower pharyngeal
bone is described as broadly triangular and somewhat heart-shaped, with
numerous uniformly small, crowded bicuspid teeth. Several lernaeid
copepods were reported on the holotype. It has been confused in fishery
records with Nyassachromis leuciscus, and its current population
status is reported as unknown.
