Placidochromis orthognathus
Genus: Placidochromis
Type locality: Chilola Bay, Lake Malawi, Mozambique
Biotope: Deep-water habitat below 50 m, recorded from 123–125 m, within the deep-living Placidochromis assemblage inhabiting subdued light conditions.
Special notes: Part of the deep-water Placidochromis radiation highlighted after Hanssens (2004) described numerous species from depths exceeding 50 m. Assigned to group 5 of this assemblage (species characterized by 11–13 gill rakers). Noted for strong jaws and an oblique gape reminiscent of paedophagous cichlids.
