Sexual dimorphism:
Adult males develop stronger coloration and may show diagonal striping and vertical bars.
Females are generally less intensely colored.

Very large aquarium with extensive open swimming space.
Fine sand substrate recommended; rocks may be included but should not dominate the layout.
Diet:
Piscivorous predator feeding primarily on smaller cichlids.
Breeding:
Maternal mouthbrooder.
Males defend small spawning pits beneath or between rocks; females guard fry after release.
Aggression:
Highly predatory and dominant.
Not suitable for community aquaria with smaller species.
Special notes:
One of the largest and most wide-ranging piscivorous cichlids in Lake Malawi.
Subadults show a characteristic striped pattern.
Frequently confused with other large Buccochromis species.
