Open sandy habitats.
Observed feeding by scooping sand from the soft substrate.
Recorded from shallow water at about 5 meters down to deeper
zones of approximately 30 meters.
Geographic distribution:
Northeastern shores of Lake Malawi, north of Lundu.
Aggression:
Peaceful and non-territorial.
Breeding males do not defend territories.
Special notes:
Distinguished from similar sand-dwelling Gephyrochromis forms by the
presence of a black band in the anal fin.
Previously referred to as Pseudotropheus sp. ‘tropheops sand blackfin’,
later reassigned to Gephyrochromis based on tooth structure and
feeding behavior.
