Genus: Gephyrochromis
Biotope: Open sandy habitats. Observed feeding by scooping sand from the soft substrate. Recorded from shallow water at about 5 meters down to deeper zones of approximately 30 meters.
Geographic distribution: Northeastern shores of Lake Malawi, north of Lundu.
Aggression: Peaceful and non-territorial. Breeding males do not defend territories.
Special notes: Distinguished from similar sand-dwelling Gephyrochromis forms by the presence of a black band in the anal fin. Previously referred to as Pseudotropheus sp. ‘tropheops sand blackfin’, later reassigned to Gephyrochromis based on tooth structure and feeding behavior.
