Genus: Diplotaxodon
Biotope: Deep offshore habitat sampled by deep-water trawl off Cape Maclear.
Geographic distribution: Known only from a single deep-water trawl record off Cape Maclear
Sexual dimorphism: Only a single adult male specimen is known. When freshly collected it showed a purplish sheen and a largely white dorsal fin.
Breeding: The only known specimen is an adult male in breeding condition captured in March 2016.
Special notes: Known from a single adult male (D13-I09 / taxon MC843) collected by deep-water trawl off Cape Maclear in March 2016. It was first treated as D. ecclesi, but is separated from that species by male breeding colours, especially the largely white dorsal fin rather than a predominantly black dorsal with a thin white margin. Whole-genome data place it as sister to a large clade that includes D. macrops.
