Sandy substrates in the northern part of Lake Malawi.
At Mbenji Island males were observed constructing bowers in
water no deeper than about 10 m, including sites on muddy
bottom against small rocks.
Geographic distribution:
Mainly in the northern part of Lake Malawi, with
observations also from Mbenji Island.
Typical adult size:
Males up to about 21 cm total length.
Aquarium setup:
Requires sandy areas for bower construction.
Males build relatively shallow bowers; in some localities
spawning sites were formed against small rocks on soft
substrate.
Breeding:
Breeding males construct shallow bowers on sand.
At certain localities bowers were made against small rocks
when the substrate was too soft for regular sand-turret
construction.
Aggression:
Territorial during the breeding period, with males
defending their constructed bowers.
Special notes:
One of the larger species within the genus.
Observations indicate variation in bower structure depending
on local substrate conditions.
